A Self unLimited perspective for Team Development

Teams of individuals

It’s often said that there is no “I” in “Teams”. But there is a “m” and an “e” – so there’s a “Me”! Teams are made up of individuals.

Each Team is the sum – and more – of the particular individuals in it, so it makes sense to have a dual focus on self-development and team development. And not just Self in service to the current team, but self evolving authentically and with empowerment as it’s own cohesive unit that can couple and re-couple in any or many teams.

Great teams revel in the uniqueness and diversity of its individuals.

Introducing Self unLimited

Self unLimited is a way of being that focuses on the individual. To be Self unLimited, is to adopt three essential mindsets that connect an individual to personal decision-making and responsibilities for their workscape:

  • I am self-employed regardless of who pays me
  • I  lead myself as I direct my work adventures
  • The grass is greener where I water it

Self unLimited is a product range (including book, courses, elearning, cards and coaching) of Questo. It has its own website where you can explore and draw upon resources to aid personal professional development.

Utilising Self unLimited with your Team

As a Team, you can utilise Self unLimited in two ways:

  1. A collection of practices to elevate a whole team of individuals, addressing specific challenges. See the selection below.
  2. A development program for individuals ready to exercise personal empowerment. Is Self unLimited for Me?

Team Challenges and Self unLimited Responses

Attending to self-care and well-being

The Team is not creating opportunities to learn individually or as a group, that go beyond attending a course. There is much potential to grow in applying what is already known, to new challenges and in new ways. There’s mutual benefit to derive from sharing what each other knows, thus uplifting and enriching the whole team’s capability.

Collection of practices from Self unLimited

These are practices that an individual can develop, as well as a team. Learning to do these practices together is in itself a team development activity. When these practices are shared, there is a common language and common processes to use as the foundation for being an effective and high-functioning self-managing team.

Activity Time Budget

This technique helps an individual/team use their precious, finite resource of time wisely in activities that are the most valuable for their work.

User Guide

This technique helps an individual reflect and get clear on how they want to be treated and to articulate the conditions that will bring out the best in them within a team context.

Professional Enrichment Plan

This technique helps an individual be creative in finding ways to grow, extend or enrich themself. There’s much possibility to explore, then define and make a plan to which they can commit, and fulfill in a team context.

Self-care Practices

This approach helps an individual/team reflect and get clear on how they want to give attention to their well-being at work, and to articulate the plans they will follow.
