Developing together to be a most effective team

Many teams seek to be collaborative. Many teams have not achieved a useful foundation for collaborative activity by calibrating or synergising as a team.

There are five conversations that are the foundation for collaboration:

  1. Who am I
  2. Who are you
  3. Who are we
  4. How will we work together
  5. What is our work (tasks and goals)

Much effort in attempting to collaborate focuses on Conversation 5, overlooking the foundation that can be created in Conversations 2-4 to enable effective collaboration. Our Teamship Development service addresses this gap by helping teams to have Conversations 2-4 for their current context, and become fluent as individuals and team in being able to have these conversations in other teams at other times.

What is the service

A trusted advisor relationship between a Questo facilitator and your team over a nine-month period focusing on Forming and Storming aspects [1] of Team Development.

Who is it for

  • Teams of 3-10 people
  • Whole teams with team lead included
  • Newly formed team; a team that has recently been restructured; or a team with a new leader
  • Team with collaboration challenges
  • Team within an organisation with genuine commitment to team development and high functioning teams

What is the approach

We start with one-to-one conversations with all team members – it’s a chance to get to know, understand and appreciate each other.

Next, we host a group exploratory session (2-3 hours) to explore what is current, what might be worth attention, and what is possible.

Then we have a check-in chat with Team Lead, reflecting on what emerged and any current organisational context to consider.
Throughout the nine-months, we have monthly check-ins with team (could be part of a regular team meeting).

Beyond that? Possibilities include team co-design workshops, team learning workshops, individual mentoring and/or coaching sessions; recommended activities or learning opportunities for individuals and teams. These may come from our collection or something we customer create for you or another sources we bring to the situation. All part of the service.

We don’t have the answers for what your Team Development should look or feel like. Your team comes up with the questions and decides how, when and where they want to address them. We will likely have suggestions and prompts to stimulate fresh thinking and for taking new paths not travelled before. Your team decides what Team Development value they want, and Questo facilitates co-creation of Team Development Plans and activities to generate that value.

This is not a series of courses or training sessions. New knowledge might come in a small insight or choice, and from the groups. The key is using that to actually make a difference.

The team learns by practising, watching others, practising and reflecting on what is or isn’t effective in that context. They give dedicated space and time to allow things to be experienced and to emerge. Sometimes, but often not simple problem-solution thinking. The team engages with subtleties and entangles with complexities that are just part of the ‘messiness’ of being people in a group.

Change Design Principles we start with as the basis for Team Development are:
22 – Offer agency; Leverage choice.
28 – Human connections bridge emotional distance.
40 – Small and consistent is worthy change.
41 – Questions are good; even ones without answers.
42 – Do what you can. Use what you can.

You can get a feel for the beliefs and style that we think can be helpful to make team change. You’re invited to choose others, as you shape a meaningful experience for your team and context.

For both team and individual practices to increase capability, addressing a mixture of mindset, skills, tools and knowledge-base.

What does the service cover

We provide the Development Facilitator, whose role is:

  • Provoke and stimulate fresh thoughts that challenge assumptions and status quo
  • Introduce new knowledge, methods and models that can be readily implemented
  • Provide support and guidance when entering new territory – taking the edge off uncertainty and offering relief when the challenge seems overwhelming

We use unique custom IP, plus source IP from reputable sources with their permission.

We provide materials for whatever we run for you; plus handouts and notes that your team can keep for current and future use.

You provide the facilities (including digital platforms for any ongoing collaborative activity) and any catering. We may provide access to publicly available digital tools to enrich workshop sessions.

You provide access to knowledge of internal resources like collaboration platforms; L&D programs; HR policies; organisational strategies. Insights from these can help us understand the team functional and development context.
