Learn what you need or want to know in a way that suits you

Lots of learning is like off-the-shelf clothing – you have to take what is offered as it is. This is different. This is customised learning that mixes together a set of varied learning opportunities that fit a person or team. It starts with somewhere useful to begin, and adapts to growing needs and desires – because you’ll become more aware of what the next learning step might be.

The focus is applied learning. This means it is hands-on and connected to your day-to-day realities.

And it will be fun and engaging! The best learning experiences include challenges and conditions that stimulate the mind, body and soul – so expect a good dose of things to enchant you.

What you get

a. Learning Needs Analysis

A conversation to explore what learning is needed or desired. It starts with you, not me. It takes into consideration your current reality and any relevant organisational factors. It includes preferences for when and how learning happens.

b. Personalised Learning Development Plan

An artefact that presents the learning activities and opportunities in an organised form so everyone involved can have confidence about what might happen when, and how. It provides a useful reference for starting out on the learning journey.

Expect your plan to have an interesting mix of listening, reading, watching, doing, experimenting and sharing activities; as well as things to do alone and with others. The contents will be tempered by your learning budget, and utilise available and handy resources where possible. It will include useful indicators to guide direction and progress.

C. Oversight and Guidance

A guide to help you walk the path laid out in the development plan, while also watching out for new learning possibilities along the way. Sometimes contributing directly in delivering a learning activity; at other times co-ordinating the logistics of getting learning opportunities underway.

Who this is for

  • Individuals seeking a personalised diverse learning experience
  • Teams seeking a unique collective learning experience

This is a premium offering, and only available to a small number of clients at any one time to ensure personalised attention.

When and where

Short answer – it depends! You may have constraints to consider. There may be possibilities to suggest that you’ve not yet considered. Bottom line – it will be what fits the person or people.

Possibilities

Here’s two possibilities of what this could look like. Other possibilities can be explored and shaped with you.

Possibility 1 for a Team

  • Four 3-hour applied team learning workshops, held once every 4 weeks.
  • Proceeding across a set of topics: may be all agreed in advance, or some agreed with scope for emergence and/or direction by team members
  • Challenges and assignments given to undertake between workshops back in the workplace, applying what has been learnt and experimenting with unknowns
  • Optional mentoring/thinking-partner sessions between workshops for individuals to explore personal challenges

Possibility 2 for an Individual

  • 6-month pathway of mixed learning events and activities, like …
    • Reading a book and sharing about your insights at a team meeting
    • Listening to a podcast and writing a review – or even being on a podcast to share your thoughts and experience being interviewed as a subject matter expert
    • Attending an internal course, and forming up a personal project with the Learning Curator to undertake in applying what you learnt
    • Conducting an experiment formed up with the Learning Curator to discover what you don’t know about something
    • Being supervised in doing a limited set of mentoring sessions with a junior, to explore and refine such skill
    • Keeping a regular journal for a period of reflective or gratitude practice
  • Starts with 1-1 session to explore learning needs and desires and co-create an initial learning development plan
  • Moral and logistical support from your Team Leader to work through the learning development plan
  • Guidance and contributions from Learning Curator-Facilitator in following, and where appropriate diverging from, the plan

What others have said about Helen’s learning guidance

My team especially liked how Helen tailored her approach to work with each individual to understand the difference challenges we each faced. The ongoing support (in person and virtual) we received from Helen to look at each of our threats, identify opportunities and then implement strategies for success lead to each team member sharing something that we’re especially proud of. In our last team retrospective, we were all asked to write down one thing that enable us to be successful as individuals and as a team, the response was clear, it was Helen.

I was extremely fortunate to receive mentoring with the extraordinary, Helen Palmer. The brief was originally about Design Thinking but due to her generosity and multi-disciplinary background I got access to whole lot more, including samples of her work. While there was a plan, Helen was extremely adaptive and entertained all my questions – sometimes answering them in between sessions with suggested resources and reading. She delivered beyond my expectations – highly recommended!

~ Niki Moorcroft, Evolve and Amplify

Helen’s enthusiasm and supportive style make her a joy to be around. Empathetic to my recent relocation and passion for change, she proactively created an opportunity for me to be involved in a design/change project. She introduced me to design thinking and challenged me to develop a people-centric view of business. The business design tools she has introduced to me will be invaluable in my work of facilitating human-centred organisational change.
