For more on the Key Factors: Hope, Trust, Compassion and Stability

Start by familiarising yourself with the four KEY FACTOR cards. (Note: The KEY FACTOR cards can be purchased separately. They are also included in the Change Design Principles Deck of Cards.)

Using only KEY FACTOR Cards

VERSION 1a – Explore the Emotional Climate and Design Change

Guiding a conversation with an individual or a group, explore the need and actions to affect the Key Factors. This can be for a general check-in or it can be for a specific moment/experience. It can also be used for self (subjective) check-in or getting into an empathetic perspective for those you are serving.

  1. Place the four KEY FACTOR cards on a flat surface in a row. (Suggestion: Put them in the order from left to right of Hope, Trust, Compassion and Stability.)
  2. Imagine three rows with the bottom row representing Low, the middle row representing Neutral, and the top row representing High. (See image below)
  3. Now, move each card to the row that best represents the current state. Record this configuration, for example, take a photograph.
  4. Share thoughts on why the cards are arranged this way and describe the current situation.
  5. Now, move each card to the row that best represents the desired state. Record this configuration, for example, take a photograph.
  6. Share thoughts on why the cards are arranged this way and how this differs from the current state.
  7. Make a choice about which 1 or 2 KEY FACTORs to give priority attention.
  8. Decide what attention is needed, e.g. maintain the state, increase or decrease the state.
  9. Imagine a set of actions or activities that will create the desired effect for the priority KEY FACTORs.
  10. Choose and implement relevant actions and activities to affect change.

Suggestion: Instead of laying the cards on a flat surface, they could be affixed to a vertical surface (like the side of a filing cabinet or a whiteboard) using blu-tac or magnets.

VERSION 1b – Discern Key Factors from a Conversation and Design Change

Reflect on a conversation to explore the need and actions to affect the Key Factors.

  1. Start a conversation with a person or a group.
  2. As the conversation progresses, listen deeply for words and ideas that indicate the current situation as well as the desired situation.
  3. Place the four KEY FACTOR cards on a flat surface in a row. (Suggestion: Put them in the order from left to right of Hope, Trust, Compassion and Stability.)
  4. Imagine three rows with the bottom row representing Low, the middle row representing Neutral, and the top row representing High. (See image above)
  5. Reflect on what was said in the conversation and move the cards to illustrate the current state of each Key Factor for this situation.
  6. Share thoughts on why the cards are arranged this way and describe the relevant aspects of the current situation.
  7. Reflect on what was said in the conversation and move the cards to illustrate the desired state of each Key Factor for this situation.
  8. Share thoughts on why the cards are arranged this way and describe the relevant aspects that indicate the need for change.
  9. Make a choice about which 1 or 2 KEY FACTORs to give priority attention.
  10. Decide what attention is needed, e.g. maintain the state, increase or decrease the state.
  11. Imagine a set of actions or activities that will create the desired effect for the priority KEY FACTORs.
  12. Choose and implement relevant actions and activities to affect change.

Using PRINCIPLE cards alongside KEY FACTOR cards

VERSION 2 – Design Change using Change Design Principles

Extending Version 1 Activity above, use Change Design Principles to shape change design choices

Start by familiarising yourself with the 65 PRINCIPLE cards in the Change Design Principles Deck of Cards.

  1. For the chosen KEY FACTORs, select five PRINCIPLE cards (in small groups or just for yourself) that you think are most relevant to effect desired outcomes.
  2. Looking at the selected PRINCIPLES individually, as combinations or as a whole set, imagine a set of actions, activities or experiences that will create the desired effect for the chosen KEY FACTOR.
  3. Choose and implement relevant actions and activities to affect change.
  4. When designing and implementing changes, ensure your choices align to the chosen PRINCIPLES.
  5. Monitor the evolving situation. Repeat this activity as needed to reflect changes in the state of the KEY FACTORS and changes to selected PRINCIPLES.
